Planters First Bank is proud to recognize Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October, joining the nationwide initiative led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) to promote stronger online safety
habits.
“Protecting sensitive information requires everyone’s awareness, especially as online threats continue to evolve,” said Kandi Clem, Marketing Support Officer at Planters First Bank. “We remain committed to strong cybersecurity practices through employee training and customer education. Our transition to a .bank domain adds another layer of protection, since only verified banks can use it and must follow strict security requirements that help prevent phishing and other impersonation attacks.”
Reducing Your Risk
As part of this initiative, Planters First Bank and the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) are reminding customers of practical steps that can safeguard financial data and support quick response in the event of a data breach. With 68 percent of cybersecurity incidents tied to human error and more than half of Americans uncertain how to proceed after a compromise, promoting smart digital behaviors remains essential.
Although no method fully eliminates the risk of online identity theft, individuals can reduce exposure by taking the following precautions:
• Limit disclosed information. Do not respond to unsolicited requests for personal or financial details, even if they look legitimate.
• Create strong and unique passwords. Use complex passwords for each account, supported by a password manager when possible, and update them regularly.
• Enable security features. Opt for the strongest multifactor authentication available, such as a one-time passcode or authentication app.
• Guard against phishing attempts. Examine messages carefully before clicking links or providing information, verify authenticity, and report suspicious activity immediately.
• Maintain up-to-date software. Keep operating systems, apps, and antivirus tools current, and enable automatic updates when possible.
• Monitor accounts for unusual activity. Review financial statements frequently and contact your bank right away if anything appears out of the ordinary.
“Cyber threats continue to evolve, making it more important than ever for consumers to actively safeguard their financial data,” said ICBA President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey. “Community banks are committed to protecting customers through robust security measures and by equipping them with the knowledge to stay secure in today’s digital landscape. Even small adjustments to our online habits can have a significant impact in minimizing the risks of cyberattacks.”
Engaging Cybersecurity Education
To support public awareness, the cybersecurity community continues to develop creative tools that make learning both accessible and engaging. “Kubikle,” a comedy web series, highlights the realities of modern cybercrime operations, demonstrating that many cybercriminals work in office environments rather than isolated settings. The series aims to entertain while educating, reinforcing the idea that compelling content can drive stronger learning outcomes.
